Restaurants North Captiva Island
North Captiva’s dining scene is as unique and relaxed as the island itself. Forget chain restaurants and bustling crowds; here, you’ll find a small collection of charming, locally-loved spots perfect for a laid-back meal. This guide covers everything from on-island gems to essential tips for a delicious vacation.
On-Island Restaurants: Your Go-To Spots
There are three primary restaurants on North Captiva, all clustered near the ferry dock and easily accessible by golf cart.
1. Mainstay North Captiva (Formerly Barnacles)
This spot is the island’s iconic, go-to destination. Re-envisioned after Hurricane Ian, it’s the quintessential waterfront beach bar where sandy feet are always welcome.
- The Vibe: Lively, family-friendly, and a favorite local gathering place with both a classic tiki hut and an indoor air-conditioned area.
- The Food: Expect classic island fare like fresh Gulf seafood, conch fritters, and great cheeseburgers. I highly recommend the Grouper Reuben. A major upgrade is the new full liquor bar, serving fantastic tropical cocktails. 🍹
- Good to Know: It’s a must-visit for both lunch and dinner.

2. Over The Waterfront
For a more intimate and scenic experience, this is your spot. As one of Florida’s few true over-the-water restaurants, it’s perfect for a special occasion.
- The Vibe: Romantic and celebratory, with a sun deck overlooking Safety Harbor that’s perfect for watching dolphins.
- The Food: The menu is seasonal and creative, featuring expertly prepared local seafood, steaks, and pasta.
- Good to Know: This restaurant is BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage), so pack your favorite wine or beer. Reservations are essential as space is very limited.
Over The Waterfront (OTW) is located within the private neighborhood of Safety Harbor Club on North Captiva Island. The restaurant is open to the public. This is a Bring Your Own Booze, non-alcholic drinks can be purchased.
Dining at one of Florida’s few remaining truly over the water restaurants is a delightful experience. The outside sun deck offers dining with the harbor’s sparkling waters surrounding you. Maybe the dolphins will just swim by and visit while you dine…
Currently the hour are Lunch: Wednesday-Saturday 11 am- 2 pm
Dinner: Saturday & Sunday 5-8 pm
Just come on over and taste some delicious homemade cuisine.
Stop by or call the Safety Harbor Club Office at (239)472-1019 for reservations.

The portion sizes are huge and the food is generally great. It’s a very small operation with limited seating. Usually two people running the entire restaurant. Do not dine here if you are in a hurry.
3. Mangos Bar & Grill & Island Store
Located by the Island Club’s pools, Mangos is the most casual dining option and a hub for quick, easy meals.
- The Vibe: Laid-back poolside fun. It’s the perfect place to grab lunch in your swimsuit cover-up.
- The Food: Classic bar and grill fare, including burgers, tacos, fresh salads, and pizza.
- Good to Know: The attached Island Store is your on-island stop for essentials like sunscreen, snacks, and basic groceries.
This is the main restaurant at Island Club North Captiva. The restaurant and bar have just been updated and are open to the public. Seating is all outdoors situated between their two custom pools, the Pool Bar offers a full array of beverages. Whether it is a classic cocktail, an ice cold beer, or one of our Signature concoctions you are guaranteed to have a good time. They also offer a full selection of non-alcoholic beverages for those under 21. This restaurant and bar also does not require reservations and is seat yourself. Try one of their milkshakes, the kids love them!
They have great breakfast burritos to go and their club sandwich for lunch is HUGE!

Dining by Boat: Nearby Adventures
One of the best parts of a North Captiva vacation is exploring the surrounding waters. A short boat trip opens up several fantastic dining options.
- Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant: Famous for its “Cheeseburger in Paradise” 🍔 and walls covered in thousands of dollar bills left by visitors. Cabbage Key Restaurant is a wonderful experience and we’d highly recommend it during your stay on North Captiva Island. Note: You will either have to have your own boat or charter a private captain to get to/from Cabbage Key. Legend has it that Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger In Paradise” was written about Cabbage Key. You can get to/from Cabbage Key using Private Captains or Island Girl Charters, however you should call them to discuss timing and how their routes work. Cabbage Key Restaurant is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner daily. Reservations highly recommended for dinner.
- Tarpon Lodge (Pine Island): A restored 1926 lodge offering Old Florida charm and upscale, locally sourced seafood. While you’re waiting for the ferry, we highly suggest you have lunch or dinner at Tarpon Lodge on Pine Island. It isn’t just the best restaurant around, it may serve one of the top three crab cakes we’ve ever eaten. Tarpon Lodge. Address: 13771 Waterfront Dr, Bokeelia FL 33922. Ph: (239) 283-3999
- The Green Flash (Captiva Island): A popular spot renowned for fresh catches and witnessing the elusive “green flash” at sunset.
- Barnacle Phil’s (Useppa Island): A casual restaurant on a members-only island that often welcomes public boaters for a meal.
Know Before You Go: Island Dining Logistics
Dining on a remote island requires a bit of planning. Here are the answers to the most common questions.
- Reservations: Yes! They are required for dinner at Over The Waterfront.
- Dress Code: The rule is “island casual.” A swimsuit with a cover-up is fine for lunch, while shorts and a nice shirt are perfect for dinner. No formal attire is needed.
- Hours: Restaurant hours can vary by season. Always call ahead to confirm they are open and serving.
- Kid-Friendly: All three on-island restaurants are welcoming to families and children. 👨👩👧👦
- Payment: Most places accept major credit cards, but it’s wise to bring some cash, as internet connectivity can sometimes be spotty.
Alternatives to Dining Out
Many visitors find that the best meals are the ones they make themselves, surrounded by stunning views.
Groceries and Cooking In
Planning ahead is key. Most visitors order groceries from mainland services like Publix or Whole Foods for delivery to the ferry terminal before they depart. Private shoppers are available to make your vacation stress free. For forgotten items, Mango’s General Store stocks the basics, though prices are higher. Cooking fresh-caught fish on your rental’s deck while the sun sets is an unbeatable experience.
Hiring a Private Chef
For a truly luxurious experience, consider hiring a private chef. This is a fantastic option for celebrating a special occasion. The chef handles everything from shopping and cooking to cleanup, allowing you to enjoy a gourmet meal in the comfort of your vacation rental. Book 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season.
