North Captiva Island has always been defined by what it hasn’t become — a place where natural beauty still takes priority, where uncrowded beaches meet quiet conservation efforts, and where the community works together to preserve what makes this barrier island so special.
The Green Wall Project is the latest example of that community stewardship in action.
What Is the Green Wall Project?
Rather than relying on fences or hard barriers, the Green Wall Project creates living visual buffers using closely planted native trees. These natural screens soften the appearance of commercial areas when viewed from nearby homes, roads, and beach access points — blending businesses into the island landscape while enhancing habitat, shade, and privacy.
First Installation: Island Club on Rum Road
The pilot project is now underway at the Island Club of North Captiva along Rum Road, where 60 native calusa trees are being planted to create a natural landscape barrier between the club’s operations and surrounding homes.
A generous local homeowner — who wishes to remain anonymous — donated all 60 plants to make this installation possible. The Island Club and its staff are partnering in the planting, irrigation, and long-term care to ensure the trees establish healthy roots and grow into a mature green wall over time.
This first installation serves as a model for future projects across the island.
A Growing Vision
The Green Wall Project is part of a broader effort led by the North Captiva Conservation & Beautification Foundation — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting the island’s wildlife, habitat, and natural beauty through community-driven solutions.
As these green walls mature, they will:
- Preserve the island’s open, natural character
- Provide screening without blocking views or disrupting wildlife corridors
- Improve native habitat and shade
- Support North Captiva’s long-term conservation goals
Additional sites are being evaluated in cooperation with other local businesses, with the vision that every green wall strengthens the delicate balance between people and nature that defines this island.
Conservation Through Community
Projects like this are only possible through cooperation — property owners, local businesses, volunteers, donors, and the Foundation working together to protect what we all love about North Captiva.
Want to support the Green Wall Project? Donations help fund native plant materials, installation, irrigation, and future locations across the island. All contributions are tax-deductible and go directly toward conservation and beautification efforts.
Together, we can keep North Captiva beautiful — naturally.
